Philodendron Care Guide

Fast-growing, forgiving, and adaptable. Philodendrons are the perfect middle ground between beginner simplicity and intermediate care demands.

At a Glance

  • Difficulty: Beginner to Intermediate
  • Growth Rate: Fast (perfect for new plant parents)
  • Mature Size: 3-6 ft trailing or climbing
  • Light Tolerance: Medium to bright indirect
  • Water Needs: Moderate (less forgiving than Pothos)

Care Requirements

Philodendron vs. Pothos: Key Differences

Both are fast-growing aroids, but Philodendrons are slightly more demanding in exchange for faster growth and better-defined foliage:

  • Growth: Faster than Pothos, more dramatic visible change
  • Light Sensitivity: Prefers brighter conditions; loses vigor in low light faster
  • Humidity: Appreciates higher humidity; leaf browning in very dry air
  • Water: Less drought-tolerant; requires more consistent watering
  • Variety: Many cultivars with different leaf sizes and colors

Propagation by Cuttings

Philodendrons propagate easily in water. Cut below a node with 2-3 leaves, place in water, and roots develop in 1-2 weeks. Transition to soil once roots reach 1 inch.

Growth Support Options

Moss Pole for Climbing

Aerial roots attach to moss poles, encouraging vertical growth and denser foliage development.

Trailing from Shelves

Cascading vines create dramatic visual impact. Pinch tips for bushier growth.
